  • "Fancy" in INDA 14!

    "Fancy" in INDA 14!

I am so happy to announce that "Fancy" will be published with the work of many other amazing and talented artists. Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati received 1187 entries from 354 artists from a very broad geographic radius. The 14th International Drawing Annual will include 110 works by 66 artists. Their jury and curatorial efforts were intense in order to refine so many entries down to such a concise sampling. They accomplished this through the volunteer efforts of ten jurors from across the U.S. for this project! Such rigor is what helps to set Manifest projects apart and make their results meaningful in many ways. Professors, students, museum libraries, and the general public continue to collect their Annuals and rely on them for a view into the scope of art being made by working artists everywhere.

  • RUIN AND MONUMENT: HONOR, HONESTY, DESPAIR, DISGRACE at ArtFields 2019!

RUIN AND MONUMENT: HONOR, HONESTY, DESPAIR, DISGRACE at ArtFields 2019!

Confronting the brevity of life in our physical bodies, and the impact that one human being can have on future generations, I visited the graves of family members long deceased, whom I had never met, but knew through stories. They were powerless to confirm or deny tales told about them -- or to ever change their story for better or for worse. I was obsessed with the helpless inevitability of this reality for all of us -- and lamented that our lives will be summed up in just a few sentences. Through this work I seek to exclaim the monumentality of mere human existence. I intended for each piece to place the viewer at the level of the deceased, represented by an empty chair. I placed charcoal rubbings of their tombstones at the top of the work, as if above a row of graves. The chairs are placed in a line, like a silent tribunal, compelling the viewer to acknowledge this inevitability in his or her own life.

    ARTIST TALKS & RECEPTION
    Friday, April 5, 6-8 p.m.

    On display until April 5
    M-F, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

"Remnants of Existence" encourages an intimate reflection on the residue of memories within places that seem familiar, but may be unsafe. Marks intentionally made by the artists, combined with spontaneous reactions of material processes, operate together to document the passage of time and the power of objects. Suggestions of human body forms are left exposed and vulnerable to communicate their delicate, constantly changing nature.

"All calls are challenging to jury due to the plethora of strong work submitted...but I can safely say that this jury process was distinctly difficult with so many intriguing works (many pieces along the same vein)...in the end after many rounds (15)...a thread emerged and your work helped create a new visual story."

The exhibition will open with a reception on August 25th (from 6PM -8PM) and will run through September.
