This work considers the impressions that generations leave on their successors through the possessions they leave behind. With a printing press, I emboss images of textiles onto archival paper. Embossing mimics memory, as the impression persists despite my process, continually rising to the surface to convey a sense of presence in absence. The depicted items range from decorative, handmade doilies to utilitarian dish towels, and more intimate items - articles of clothing that came into regular contact with the body. I experimented with sleepwear, embroidered handkerchiefs, and delicate dress gloves to explore the power of the ‘thing’ to convey ideas of femininity, protection, nurturing, and lineage.
